Dog control

What to do if you have lost your dog, or found one.

If you have lost your dog

We keep a record of all found dogs that are reported lost and found to us, so we may already have your dog listed on our dog register.

To report your dog as lost, you can contact customer services on 0345 129 4870 between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday.

We always try to return a found dog to its owner, but if we cannot identify or contact its owner, we will take it to our Council Kennels and will be kept there for a maximum of three days.

If your dog has already been taken to kennels, you will be charged £25, which you'll need to pay to us. If unclaimed after 3 days, the dog will be taken to Manchester Dogs Home.

If you have found a dog

If you found a dog, you can contact customer services on 0345 129 4870 between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday.

We will arrange for our dog warden to collect the dog as soon as we can and try to reunite it with its owner. Our dog warden service operates between 8.30am - 4.00pm, Monday - Friday only

We do not operate an out of hours service.

Stray or roaming dogs

If you see a stray or roaming dog, you can contact us on 0345 129 4870 between 8am - 6pm, Monday to Friday. We will arrange for our dog warden to collect the dog as soon as we can.

Our dog warden service operates between 8.30am - 4.00pm, Monday - Friday only. If you find a stray dog after this time, you can take the dog to  Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home. Please call them first so a member of their staff can plan to meet you.

Unclaimed stray dogs

We have a statutory duty to keep the dog in kennels for a period of seven days. If the dog is not claimed after this time, the owner loses all rights to it. The dog is then usually offered for re-homing.

If you find a stray dog which isn't claimed within 7 days, you may be able to keep it. The dog warden will contact you to discuss your legal obligations.
