Street Dance comes to High Peak

Date: 01/07/2009

Hip-hop and break dance sessions at Chapel leisure centre

The UK's top street dance act is to strut its stuff in free taster workshops at Chapel-en-le-Frith Leisure Centre.

The award-winning Trinity Warriors will be doing their thing from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday 11 July and again on Saturday 15 August to launch a Chapel Street Dance initiative to get youngsters on their feet.

And the timing could not be better as it follows hot on the heels of street dance group Diversity winning this year's series of hit TV show Britain's Got Talent.

Funded by High Peak Borough Council and Derbyshire County Council, the taster sessions will herald weekly classes to be staged by the two authorities at the leisure centre from September or October.

The classes will teach hip-hop and break dance to beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers.

Lessons for individuals and small groups will be up for grabs, together with larger group lessons for young people aged eight to 16.

Said borough councillor Andrew Bingham, Executive Councillor for Social and Community Development: "Street dance is a great way for youngsters to keep fit and have fun with their friends, and we're delighted that the amazing Trinity Warriors have agreed to launch our initiative.

"I'm told that the Warriors are the current UK B-Boy Champions, which is about as good as it gets", he enthused.

Taster sessions and lessons aside, borough council sports development officers will be visiting primary schools to promote the scheme and will also be dropping in to secondary schools to publicise a new street dance GCSE that it is hoped students will sign up for.
