Two councils have joined forces to make new arrangements for Glossop people needing to recycle and dispose of their household waste.
The Household Waste Recycling Centre in Melandra Road had to close for an indefinite period last week for vital repairs to a weak bridge owned by United Utilities.
But the county council and High Peak Borough Council have now made provision for residents to visit the council depot at Surrey Street each Saturday between 8am and 11am to dispose of large and small electrical items plus other items unsuitable for a household bin. The arrangement will start on Saturday 6 February.
The councils are urging people not to leave items at the depot entrance at any other time as this will be classed as fly tipping, which is an offence.
Paper, glass, cans, textiles and plastic packaging can also be taken to the borough council's recycling centres at the Co-op, Tesco or Pennine Road recycling centres in Glossop.
Residents buying new electrical equipment should ask the supplier if it offers a take-back scheme for the equipment being replaced.
In addition, the borough council offers chargeable collections of electrical and household bulky waste.
Hazardous waste should not be taken to Melandra Road but disposed of instead at the Waterswallows Household Waste Recycling Centre at Buxton, where a wide range of other materials are also accepted.
John Haken, the borough council's Executive Councillor for the Environment, said that Derbyshire County Council and High Peak Borough Council both regretted the inconvenience caused by the closure of the Melandra site.
However, he accepted that the county council had a duty to ensure the health and safety of anyone using the site, including the residents of Glossop.
"We and the county council are doing everything in our power to minimise disruption to services until the Melandra Road site reopens", he stressed.
Councillor John Allsop, Derbyshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Technology and Recycling, said: "It may be some time before the Melandra Road site reopens.
"We'd urge people to use alternative facilities in the area and not leave rubbish at the entrance to the centre, as this will be classed as fly tipping. We're sorry for any inconvenience which this may cause and ask people to bear with us while we try to resolve this matter as soon as we possibly can".
Residents should monitor their local press for further updates. Alternatively, information can be obtained from the borough council on 0845 129 7777 or online at www.highpeak.gov.uk.
