Contractors on site at Glossop Town Hall
Contractors will this week start to set up on site as they prepare to replace the roof and repair the clock at Glossop Town Hall.
High Peak Borough Council announced earlier this year that it would be investing in this important heritage building to safeguard its future by halting further deterioration of the roof.
In the months since then, a specialist team of architects, surveyors and asbestos specialists has been working to design and cost the project to renovate the roof, remove all of the asbestos in the roof space, replace the gutters and the parapets and repair the clock.
Council Leader, Councillor Tony Ashton, said: "It is satisfying to see work now getting underway on this key project to safeguard one of Glossop's most important public buildings.
"This is a complex scheme which has required careful planning to ensure the impact of the work in the busy town centre location is minimised and carried out safely so I'm pleased that we are now at the stage where the work can begin.
"In the next couple of weeks people will see scaffolding being erected around the building but, other than that, it's very much business as usual. The Arcade shops and the markets will continue to trade as normal."
Following the erection of the scaffolding and environmental wrap which will cover the Town Hall, the work will take place in stages and will include removing the asbestos; removing and replacing the roof; an environmental clean; and an assessment of the clock.
