Radon

Here you will find advice on dealing with radon in domestic and commercial premises

Radon is a naturally-occurring radio-active gas which is formed in the ground.  It is colourless and odourless.  It seeps to the surface and can build up inside properties.

Health studies have linked prolonged exposure to radon gas with lung cancer.  Properties with radon levels above 200 Bequerels (400 Bequerels for commercial properties) will require some form of action.

Radon in domestic premises

Testing involves having two small detectors (which are sent out and returned by post) in the house for three months. Most tests are carried out by the Public Health England Radon measurement service (opens new window).  There is a small charge for the detectors.

Costs for radon detection tests will vary.  If you rent your property, your landlord should pay for the work.

Radon remediation work

If you are a Council tenant, we are responsible for testing at your property. We have a programme for carrying out tests in the properties we manage.

If testing shows that radon levels are above 200 Bequerels, action will be taken to reduce the levels.

Radon in commercial premises

Premises with poorly ventilated areas are more likely to have radon problems.  The only way to be sure is to have a test.  Most tests are carried out by the Public Health England Radon measurement service (opens new window)
