Armed Forces Covenant
Information about our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.
The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation ensuring that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. This commitment is made in recognition of the sacrifices they make on behalf of the country. The Covenant sets out the following two key principles:
- Those who serve in the Armed Forces, whether regular or reserve, those who have served in the past, and their families, should not face any disadvantage compared to other citizens in the provision of public and commercial services.
- Special treatment is appropriate in some cases, especially for those who have given most such as the injured or the bereaved.
High Peak Borough Council re-signed the Armed Forces Covenant on 7th March 2019.
Our Commitment
By signing the Covenant the Council has made a number of commitments:
- We have appointed the Mayor of the Borough as its Armed Forces Champion. Our lead officer is Linden Vernon (email linden.vernon@highpeak.gov.uk).
- We are a member of the Derbyshire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership. This group brings together key partners and the armed forces to work with, help and practically support current and former service personnel and their families in the local area.
- We will promote the Armed Forces Covenant Fund. This is a National grant scheme total ling £10 million each year. You can apply for a grant at: https://www.covenantfund.org.uk/
- We will promote the aims of the Covenant and ensure that our staff who deal with members of the public are aware of these commitments.
- We will support our employees who are members of the Reserve Forces and cadet organisations recognising the need to be flexible with regard to leave for training, supporting any mobilisations and deployment.
The Borough Council holds a Bronze Award from the Defence Employment Recognition Scheme, marking our further commitment. The scheme encourages employers to pledge, demonstrate or advocate support to defence and the Armed Forces Community, and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.
