Annual Canvass

Every year between July and November the Council must carry out the annual canvass to update the Electoral Register

Ukrainian citizens are not eligible to register to vote in England as the Ukraine is not a member of the EU or Commonwealth.

Therefore, Ukrainian citizens are not eligible to register to vote in England and should not be in included on canvass forms.

Every year between July and November the Council must carry out the annual canvass to update the Electoral Register to ensure it is complete and accurate. However, legislation has been passed which has reformed the annual canvass to make it simpler for residents and make it less administratively and financially burdensome.

Although every property will still receive a letter at the start of canvass (mid July beginning August) the reformed canvass requires all Electoral Registration Officers to match data they hold against National Government Data (DWP records) and are given the option to data match against other local data sources (eg council tax and benefit records). The results of the data matching step determines the type of canvass letter each property receives.

In the next few days your property will receive a letter - please note that is will be addressed to 'The Occupier'.

Please read your letter carefully in order to determine whether there is a requirement for you to respond. Where possible please avoid sending responses back to us in the post but use one of the automated household response methods instead. All the details on how to do this are included on the front of the letter sent to your property.

If you receive a CCA communication letter there is no requirement to respond unless there is a change to make to your details.

If you receive a CCB communication letter there is a requirement to respond. Please use one of the following methods:

  • To make changes - go online www.householdresponse.com/highpeak enter your security code update your information and submit

The information provided to us in response to these letters will enable us to send a separate individual registration form to all the people in your household who are eligible and need to register, or they can register online www.gov.uk.register-to-vote.
