Boosting leisure opportunities in Cote Heath

Two projects to provide new activity and leisure opportunities in Cote Heath are now open.

Working with the local community - including skate park users and Buxton Junior School - the Borough Council has invested £250,000 in a brand new concrete skate park to replace the old, outdated one.

After Easter, Buxton-based Zink will be offering coaching sessions at the skate park after the Council paid for a volunteer from the organisation to gain a coaching qualification. Look out for more details when the dates are agreed.

And the first pétanque piste in the High Peak is also now available for use thanks to a partnership between the Council, High Peak Petanque Club and Tarmac who provided funding of over £16,000 from their Landfill Communities Fund.

Councillor Damien Greenhalgh, Deputy Leader and Executive Councillor for Regeneration, Tourism and Leisure, said: "It's fantastic to see these two new community play facilities now open and being well used after our significant investment boosted by funding from partners.

"I'd like to thank the local community for their involvement in the skate park project and Tarmac and the Petanque Club for their support with the provision of the piste - the first one in High Peak.

"We're committed to helping people lead healthy, active lives and projects like these help to provide a diverse range of opportunities for people from across the Borough to get moving more, enjoy being outdoors and perhaps try something they haven't done before."

High Peak Mayor, Councillor Stewart Gardner, officially opened the pétanque piste at the weekend recognising its status as the first in the Borough.

High Peak Petanque Club, who had been using a local gravel car park for their games, approached the Council about the installation of permanent facilities. The pétanque piste is open to everyone and an interpretation board has been installed on site detailing how to play.

Both the Council and the Club hope this will allow the Club to develop and increase its membership and encourage the wider community to get involved in this increasingly popular activity.
