Ending a tenancy - moving house

If you are thinking of moving and ending your tenancy with us, there are important things that need to be done.

Notice periods

  • you will need to give us at least 4 weeks notice in writing if you plan to end your tenancy
  • you can give notice by printing and completing the form included in the  Ending your tenancy (PDF) [266KB](opens new window) booklet
  • you can also write to us giving your current address, the address you are moving to and the date that you would like your tenancy to end
  • or you can complete our online form to end your tenancy

Rent will be charged up until the end of your tenancy and you must continue to make payments as normal. Any housing benefit you receive will be paid up until the day you move out of the property.

When we receive your letter or form we will contact you to confirm that we have received it, let you know if any rent is outstanding and arrange to inspect your property for any repairs that may need carrying out.

Tenancies must end on a Monday and you must pay rent up until that day.

It's important to inform council tax and benefits that you are moving as soon as you have a move date.

Before you leave the property

You must make sure that:

  • the property is clean and tidy
  • all furniture, carpets and your belongings have been removed
  • you have cleared any rubbish and unwanted items from the house and garden (you can arrange for large items to be removed for a small charge by booking a bulky item collection)
  • any necessary repairs (that you are responsible for) have been carried out

You will be charged for the cost of putting right any repair which is your responsibility, and the removal of any rubbish or unwanted items left at your property.

Remember: You will also need to turn the water off at the stop tap and the gas and electricity off at the meter before you leave.

Handing in keys

You must hand in all keys to the property by 12 noon on the Monday when your tenancy ends. If you fail to do this, you will be charged an additional week's rent for each extra week (or part week) that you have the keys for.

Keys can be handed in at any of the following places:

Buxton  Town Hall - 9.30am - 1.00pm Monday - Friday

Gamesley Council Office  - 9.30am - 4.30pm Thursday only. Please note, the office is closed between 12.30pm and 1.00pm.

Glossop Municipal Building - 9.30am - 1.00pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday

Other things to remember

For a detailed checklist informing you how to re-direct your mail, cancel your gas and electric suppliers, change your housing benefit claim, disconnect your telephone and much more, please read the Ending your tenancy (PDF) [266KB](opens new window) booklet.
